Peekabop is made by chewingcode (Karim Hossenbux). It has no account, no analytics and no tracking inside the app. To show lyrics it has to look them up, so a few facts about the song you’re playing do go out. This page lists exactly what, and where.
What stays on your Mac
- Audio. When “Match video timing” is on, Peekabop listens to the sound your Mac is playing (through a system audio tap you allow once) to line the lyrics up with a music video. The audio is processed in memory and never recorded, stored or sent anywhere.
- Speech recognition. Recognising the sung words uses Apple’s on-device speech recognition. Nothing is sent to Apple or anyone else for it.
- Your settings stay in the app’s preferences on your Mac.
- The microphone is never used.
What is sent, and to whom
- To find lyrics, the playing track’s title, artist, album, duration and, when known, its ISRC are sent to lrc.red and LRCLIB (lrclib.net), and to Deezer’s public API to identify the recording and fetch its artwork.
- To check your license, your license key and this Mac’s name (so you can tell your activations apart) are sent to Polar, which handles purchases and activations. If you buy Peekabop, it processes your payment and email under its own privacy policy.
- To check for updates, the app asks chewingcode.com for its update feed (Sparkle). The request includes the app and macOS versions, as any web request’s headers would; no profile is kept.
That’s all. Nothing about what’s on your screen, what you type or which apps you use is collected.
This website
chewingcode.com counts visits with a self-hosted instance of Umami, which uses no cookies and keeps no personal data. Buying opens the checkout of Polar.
